Every household in the UK is legally required to have a TV licence to watch or record live TV, regardless of the channel. However, UK residents could be entitled to a refund of up to £169.50 on their TV licence costs if they meet certain conditions.
Eligibility for Refunds
If you do not watch or record live TV and do not stream BBC iPlayer, you may be eligible for a refund on your TV licence. You can apply for a refund if you don’t need your licence again before it expires and you have at least one complete month left on it.
How to Apply
To apply for a refund, visit the TV Licensing website and follow the application process. Refunds are usually processed and issued within 21 days of the application. However, your refund may be delayed if further information is required.
Refund Calculation
The amount you are due will be calculated by TV Licensing. Refunds are calculated based on unused months. You must have at least one complete month left on your licence that you won’t need before it expires. Refunds can be issued for between one and 11 months, depending on how long you have left on your licence.
TV Licensing explains: “You won’t be eligible for a refund if there is less than one month between the cancellation date and the expiry date. If you haven’t paid for your licence in full, its expiry date may be changed to reflect what you’ve paid.”
Refunds are paid either by cheque or a BACS transfer directly into your bank account.

Free TV Licence for Over 75s
Those aged 75 or over and in receipt of Pension Credit can obtain a free TV licence instead of paying £169.50. Guidance from TV Licensing states: “Free TV licences are only available if you’re 75 or over and you, or your partner living at the same address, are receiving Pension Credit.”
To apply for a free licence, call 0300 790 6117 to request an application form. Lines are open between 8.30am and 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Processing the application may take a few weeks, and you will be contacted if there are any issues.
Separate arrangements are in place for over 75s on the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.
Conclusion
If you are eligible for a TV licence refund, make sure to apply as soon as possible to reclaim your money. For those over 75 and on Pension Credit, ensure you apply for a free licence to avoid unnecessary costs.
