In a recent court hearing, two men were sentenced for deliberately starting fires across Sussex, causing over £1 million in damage. Joshua Brinkley, 20, and Connor Luck, 21, set fire to abandoned buildings, agricultural barns, farmland, and hay bales, resulting in extensive damage and disruption.
The estimated value of the total damage caused by their actions was £1,117,825. The incidents took place at various locations between June and November 2021, including Horsham, Wivelsfield Green, Lower Willingdon, Beddingham, Rathfinny in Alfriston, Tarring Neville, Lewes Road in Ringmer, and Litlington Road in Seaford.
Investigations into each fire confirmed that they were deliberate acts of arson. Brinkley was charged with seven counts of arson, while Luck faced two counts. At Lewes Crown Court, Brinkley pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Luck also pleaded guilty and received a 21-month suspended sentence, along with 200 hours of unpaid work, 25 rehabilitation days, and a three-month electronically monitored curfew.
Detective Constable Emma Arthur-Devennie highlighted the devastating impact of the arsons on property owners and farmers. The fires destroyed a whole season’s worth of feed and bedding for animals. She emphasized that the arsons were not targeted but were carried out for the offenders’ own amusement. Although no one was seriously injured, the consequences could have been far worse.
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne condemned the senseless and dangerous actions of the offenders. She expressed relief that no one was seriously harmed but noted the significant damage caused to hardworking families and the extensive use of emergency services to combat the fires. Bourne hoped that the sentences would send a clear message to criminals who believe they can evade capture.
