Two men have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences as part of a proactive investigation led by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command. The arrests are linked to suspected connections with Hezbollah, a proscribed organisation under UK counter-terrorism legislation.
Arrests and Charges
Detectives detained a 39-year-old man on Tuesday, April 1, at an address in North West London. He was arrested on suspicion of:
- Being a member of a proscribed organisation
- Preparation for acts of terrorism
- Involvement in a funding arrangement for terrorism purposes
On the same day, officers also arrested a 35-year-old man at an address in West London on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation.
The two men were taken to a London police station but have since been released on bail pending further investigation. They are required to report back in mid-July.
Scope of the Investigation
The investigation primarily focuses on Hezbollah’s activities overseas, as well as potential activity within the UK. The Met Police have assured the public that there is no imminent threat posed by the current investigation.
Searches were carried out at five addresses:
- Two in North West London
- One in West London
- One in South West London
- One in Essex
The searches have now been completed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Counter-Terrorism Commander’s Statement
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, commented on the arrests:
**”Terrorism and terrorists have a global reach and impact, and the activities of terrorist groups overseas can harm communities here in the UK as well as causing devastation abroad.
Our investigation remains ongoing, but I hope that these arrests show we will take robust action against anyone whom we suspect of being involved in terrorist activity, regardless of whether their activity is focused here in the UK or elsewhere.”**
Community Vigilance: How to Report Suspicious Activity
Authorities have reiterated the importance of public cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts:
- If you see or hear something that doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it.
- You can do so confidentially at www.gov.uk/ACT or by calling the police on 0800 789 321.
- In an emergency, always dial 999.
Why It Matters
Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organisation under UK law, and any suspected connections are treated with utmost seriousness. Although no direct threat to the public has been identified, authorities are thorough in addressing potential risks linked to international terrorism networks.
The arrests highlight the ongoing efforts of the Counter Terrorism Command to prevent terrorism from affecting UK communities. As investigations continue, the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
