Emergency services were scrambled to Lower Mortlake Road in Richmond, south London, after two houses collapsed suddenly on Tuesday afternoon, sparking concerns over a possible gas leak. The properties, which were reportedly undergoing renovations, crumbled into rubble just before 3pm.
Locals described hearing a loud “bang” followed by “lots of smoke” before looking outside to see the destruction, with building materials strewn across the street. The two terraced houses, identified as 47 and 49 Lower Mortlake Road, were almost destroyed, leaving only the side walls intact.
Emergency responders, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, quickly arrived at the scene. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. While initial reports suggest that structural damage may have caused the collapse, authorities are investigating the possibility of a gas leak.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed that they were called to the scene at 2:56pm, and the incident was under control by 5:11pm. A spokesperson stated, “Most of two terraced houses under renovation collapsed. There are currently no reports of any injuries.” Fire crews from Richmond, Acton, and Heston fire stations attended the scene.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the collapse, with officials making enquiries to determine the exact cause.
The properties have been involved in planning disputes in recent years, with developers seeking permission for the construction of a multi-story building featuring co-living units. Richmond Council granted permission in 2022 for a part 1/2/3 storey building with 14 co-living units and associated landscaping.
As investigations continue, residents and authorities remain on alert, with further updates expected in the coming days.
