Two suspects have been charged following a violent incident at a Sainsbury’s store in Staplehurst, where a security guard sustained serious facial injuries during an attempted alcohol theft.
The disturbance occurred at around 9pm on Tuesday, June 3, at the supermarket on Market Street, where staff reportedly confronted suspects attempting to steal alcohol.
According to Kent Police, the confrontation escalated into violence. The security guard was struck in the face with a can, and several glass bottles were thrown, including one that shattered a glass door.
Swift Arrests Following Disturbance
Responding officers tracked the suspects to a car which was stopped at 9.30pm the same evening. Both occupants were arrested and later charged.
Teen Suspect Pleads Guilty
On 5 June, a 17-year-old boy from Marden appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the following charges:

Causing actual bodily harm
He was granted bail under strict conditions and is due to be sentenced at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 7 July.
Second Suspect Remanded in Custody
Davey Brown, 18, of Winch’s Garth, Staplehurst, also appeared in court to face charges of:

Criminal damage

Assault
Brown did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody. He will next appear at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on 4 July.
Ongoing Investigation
Kent Police confirmed that the security guard is recovering from his injuries. The investigation remains ongoing, and officers have praised the swift response that led to the arrests.
This incident has prompted renewed concern about violence against retail workers, particularly those working in small community shops.
