Two suspected shoplifters have been charged with theft following a day of action in Chatham on Friday, March 28, 2025. The enforcement operation, aimed at tackling crime and antisocial behavior, was conducted by beat officers, PCSOs, and partner agencies.
During the high-profile patrols, officers visited town centre businesses and residential areas to ensure compliance with trading legislation and tenancy agreements.
Details of Theft Incidents
The arrests occurred on Chatham High Street in connection with recent theft reports from various Medway locations.

Thursday, March 13: Laundry products valued at £140 were stolen from ASDA in Strood.

Friday, March 14: Chocolates worth £250 were reported stolen from the B&M store.

Thursday, March 27: Chocolates valued at £130 were allegedly taken from the Co-op supermarket in Walderslade.
Suspects and Charges
The suspects have been identified as Samantha Lewis, 38, of Luton Road, Chatham, and Robert Downey, 43, of Downside, Rochester. Both have been charged with theft and are bailed to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 25.
Additional Enforcement and Seizures
As part of the proactive measures, officers also conducted a joint visit with Trading Standards to a vape shop, resulting in the seizure of:

28 large evidence bags containing suspected illegal vaping products.
In addition, Police Dog Dougal assisted in high visibility patrols in areas known for drug misuse and antisocial behavior. A knife arch was installed at Chatham railway station, and joint efforts with British Transport Police and Southeastern trains targeted potential criminal activity.
Other Incidents and Seizures
A motorbike suspected of being uninsured was seized, and a warning was issued about vehicles involved in antisocial driving.
