Tragedy struck on the A5 in Hinckley yesterday afternoon when a collision involving a silver BMW car and a lorry resulted in the loss of three lives, including two children. The incident occurred near Burbage and was reported to the police at 4.30pm
The response to the scene was immediate and comprehensive, with West Midlands Ambulance Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service all in attendance. Despite their best efforts, the outcome was devastating.
The driver of the car, a man in his 30s, and a nine-year-old boy who was a passenger in the vehicle, were both pronounced deceased at the scene. Additionally, a woman in her 30s and a four-year-old girl, who were also passengers in the car, were taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
Tragically, the young girl lost her life at the hospital a short time after arrival. The woman remains in the hospital in a serious but stable condition. Fortunately, the driver of the lorry involved in the collision sustained no serious injuries.
In response to the incident, a road closure was put in place in the area while emergency services carried out their duties. The road closure was eventually lifted at approximately 12:25 am on Saturday.
The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances of the collision. Detective Constable Anna Andrew, representing the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “This is an extremely sad and tragic incident, and our thoughts remain with those who have lost their lives, their families, and with others involved and who have been affected.”
Detective Constable Andrew further commended the swift response of emergency services and members of the public who assisted at the scene during the distressing circumstances. She emphasised the ongoing support provided to the families of those involved and the commitment to investigating the collision comprehensively.
The police have already initiated inquiries, but they encourage anyone with information about the collision, who may have witnessed the incident or observed either of the vehicles prior to the collision, to come forward. Additionally, they request that individuals with dashcam footage review their recordings and share relevant information with the authorities to aid in their investigation.
