On Tuesday, a devastating accident unfolded near Venice in northern Italy, claiming the lives of at least 20 people, according to statements attributed to the city’s mayor by Italian newspaper la Repubblica.
The tragic incident occurred when a coach veered off the road, plummeting from an overpass near the district of Mestre, which is intricately connected to Venice via a bridge. Reports from Italian news agencies and television highlighted that the coach crashed dangerously close to railway lines.
As emergency response teams worked tirelessly at the scene, Sky Italia reported that 18 bodies had been recovered from the wreckage, with the coach engulfed in flames. The intensity of the fire complicated rescue efforts, and numerous individuals sustained injuries in the accident.
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, expressed her condolences and solidarity with the victims and their families. On social media, she shared, “I express my deepest condolences, my personal and that of the entire government, for the serious accident that occurred in Mestre. My thoughts are with the victims and their families and friends.”
Prime Minister Meloni also emphasised her close contact with Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi to stay updated on the tragic developments.
