Three people have been confirmed killed and another nineteen injured in Russia’s missile attacks on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. The city, with a population of approximately 710,000, lies in Ukraine’s southeast and has been subjected to regular Russian attacks due to its proximity to the front line.
Among the injured were two journalists and a nine-year-old boy. Four victims are in severe condition, according to the regional administration. The attack resulted in significant damage, including three apartment blocks, at least ten private houses, shops, and an unidentified industrial facility. Images from the site show shattered windows of a cafe and a small shop.
Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that there were two missile strikes, followed by another strike approximately 40 minutes later at the same location, just as rescuers and police were working on the scene. The situation remains tense, and information on the full extent of the attack is still being established.
Russia’s recent use of ballistic missiles, which are harder to intercept, has raised concerns. Additionally, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has become a focal point. Russian officials accused Ukraine of attacking the plant, but the Ukrainian military drones reportedly caused no damage to its critical infrastructure. The six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia plant, held by Russia, are currently not in operation, but the plant remains a significant concern given its proximity to the war’s front line in Ukraine.
