Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, a revered British Army officer, remains in a ‘serious but stable condition’ following a brutal stabbing incident outside his home in Gillingham, Kent. Despite the distressing circumstances, the community has shown overwhelming support, contributing thousands of pounds to his charity fundraiser for Combat Stress, a veterans’ mental health organization.
The attack occurred on Tuesday evening when Lt Col Teeton, dressed in his military uniform, was ambushed by a moped rider armed with a knife, just 200 meters from Brompton Barracks. His wife, Eileen Teeton, courageously intervened during the assault, potentially saving his life by pulling the attacker away.
Following the incident, Lt Col Teeton’s fundraising page for the Combat Stress charity surged past its original target, amassing over £8,500 to date. The page gained additional traction after celebrity endorsements, including from comedian Al Murray, who publicly supported the fundraising efforts via social media.
Anthony Esan, 24, has been charged with attempted murder in connection to the attack and appeared at Medway Magistrates’ Court. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the risks service personnel can face even at home.
The local community and the nation have rallied around Lt Col Teeton, praising both his service and his charity efforts. The incident, while tragic, has spotlighted the ongoing support needed for veterans’ mental health, a cause Lt Col Teeton has championed passionately through his participation in fundraising challenges such as the Normandy D-Day anniversary run.
As the legal proceedings against his assailant continue, the Teeton family remains focused on his recovery and the outpouring of support from both the military community and the public.
