Zyroam Allen, an 18-year-old from Hackney, has been sentenced to four years in prison for a series of sexual offences, including rape, sexual assault, and indecent exposure. The sentencing took place at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, 5 October.
The ten offences occurred in and around the Hackney Marshes area in June 2022. Officers from various Metropolitan Police teams worked together to identify and prevent Allen from causing further harm.
The investigation involved extensive efforts, including the analysis of over 400 hours of CCTV footage, the collection of numerous witness statements, and detailed forensic testing.
Despite being a minor at the time of the crimes, Allen’s anonymity has been lifted by the judge because he turned 18 the day after the sentencing.
One victim-survivor expressed her fear and trauma, stating that she no longer feels safe running along the canal or walking alone. She commended the police for their handling of the case, saying that their seriousness and communication gave the community a more positive view of law enforcement.
The victims, who were targeted while walking or jogging in broad daylight, reported being approached by Allen, who often rode a bicycle. He would grab their buttocks from behind, touch their genitals or breasts, and make inappropriate comments before quickly riding away. One woman was raped, leaving her in fear for her life, while another was exposed to Allen’s indecent behavior at her workplace.
Following reports of similar incidents, proactive police patrols were increased in the area. After the release of an e-fit to the media, multiple women came forward to report similar events happening to them.
Allen was arrested on 22 June for a breach of bail related to an unrelated offence. Six of the victims positively identified him in an identification procedure. Further forensic tests linked him to another offence.
In December 2022, Allen pleaded guilty to one count of rape, one count of indecent exposure, and seven counts of sexual assault at Wood Green Crown Court.
Detective Constable Kate Robins of CID Central East praised the bravery of the women who reported the crimes and the dedication of the officers involved in the investigation. She emphasised that every woman has the right to live without fear of sexual assault and that the Met is committed to targeting those who harm women, girls, and other vulnerable individuals.
The Metropolitan Police is actively working to build trust and support communities through its A New Met for London plan. The plan focuses on protecting women, children, and vulnerable members of society and aims to tackle violence against women and girls.
A breakdown of the crimes committed by Allen includes sexual assaults on Homerton Road, Daubeney Road, Chatsworth Road, Clifden Road, and Hackney Marshes. He also committed indecent exposure on Elderfield Road and rape on Hackney Marshes.
Anyone with additional information related to these crimes or any other incidents involving Allen is encouraged to contact the police.
