A teenage boy and his nine-year-old sister died from traumatic head injuries after the e-scooter they were riding was struck by a car, an inquest has heard.
Roman Casselden, 16, and his younger sister Darcie were both pronounced dead at the scene of the collision in Ashlyns, Pitsea, Essex, on the evening of February 1.
At the inquest opening on Wednesday in Chelmsford, Essex area coroner Michelle Brown confirmed that the siblings had been riding a privately-owned e-scooter when they were hit by a motor vehicle traveling east along Ashlyns near Stokefelde.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Darcie was pronounced dead at 7:10 PM, followed by Roman at 7:50 PM.
The provisional cause of death for both children was recorded as “traumatic head injury pending further investigation.” Their mother, Emma Casselden, formally identified them.
Driver Arrested as Police Investigation Continues
Coroner Michelle Brown stated that the driver of the vehicle involved was arrested on suspicion of various offences following the collision. Essex Police later confirmed that two individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the incident—a woman who has since been bailed and a man who was released under investigation.
Due to the ongoing police inquiry and the possibility of criminal charges, the coroner suspended both inquests, with the situation to be reviewed in four months. “I would just like to extend my personal sympathy,” Ms. Brown said, acknowledging the “very tragic circumstances” surrounding the deaths of Roman and Darcie.
Heartfelt Tributes to Siblings
Tributes have poured in for the siblings, whose untimely deaths have deeply affected the local community.
Roman, described as a selfless and compassionate teenager, was remembered for his unwavering belief in the goodness of people. “He will leave a legacy of kindness and empathy,” said family and friends.
Darcie, aged nine, was celebrated as a joyful and inspiring young girl. “She brought light and happiness to everyone lucky enough to know her,” said her mother Emma in a statement released through Essex Police. “Their love, kindness, and spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew them.”
Community Grieves as Investigation Progresses
The tragic incident has left the Pitsea community in mourning. Floral tributes have been left near the scene of the collision, with neighbors and friends paying their respects to the young lives lost.
Essex Police continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around 6:25 PM on February 1 to come forward to assist with the investigation.
The inquest will remain suspended as authorities determine whether charges will be brought in connection with the fatal collision.
