The teenager who stabbed a 16-year-old boy to death in england/manchester/”>Manchester has been named for the first time after turning 18.
L’Vaion Peniston, now 18, was just 14 when he fatally stabbed Kennie Carter in Stretford in January 2022.
At the time of his trial, reporting restrictions prevented his name being made public because of his age. Those restrictions have now lapsed following his 18th birthday.
Life Sentence Equivalent
In July 2024, Peniston was handed the youth equivalent of a life sentence at Manchester Crown Court and ordered to serve at least 17 years before parole can be considered.
Sentencing him, Mr Justice Goose said:
“This was yet another killing of a young person with a knife against the backdrop of gang violence.
The tragedy is that not only does it destroy the lives of the victims and their families, but also those who commit the offence.”
Final Words
Kennie, who was on the phone to his older brother moments before the attack, managed to say: “Oh, they’ve stabbed me in my heart, bro.”
He was later found lying in street/”>the street, where members of the public tried in vain to save his life.
Others Convicted
Three other teenagers were convicted of manslaughter during the same trial.
- Latif Ferguson, then 18, received five years’ detention.
- Boy G and Boy H, who could not be named at the time, were each sentenced to four years’ detention.
- Six others were acquitted of both murder and manslaughter.
Jurors heard that Kennie’s friends had been involved in an altercation with rivals connected to the defendants, before Peniston produced a knife.
CCTV footage later showed Peniston re-enacting the stabbing just minutes after the killing.

Kennie Carter’s death was one of several fatal stabbings in Greater Manchester in recent years, highlighting the ongoing toll of youth violence and knife crime.
