Surrey Quays Road in SE16 has been closed in both directions at the junction with Canada Street this evening following a serious road traffic collision (RTC).
The incident was first reported at 5:55pm, with emergency services rushing to the scene. A significant police and ambulance presence remains in place, and unconfirmed reports suggest a child may have been struck by a bus.
Witnesses say the scene is chaotic, with multiple emergency vehicles, paramedics and police officers attending to the situation.
A local resident told UKNIP “There are sirens everywhere. The road’s been shut off completely. People are saying a child’s been hit, but nobody knows for sure what’s going on yet.”
Transport for London has confirmed that bus routes 47, 188, 381, C10, and P12 are all currently being diverted due to the road closure. Commuters are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to check live travel updates.
UK News in Pictures has contacted both the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service for official updates. We are still awaiting a formal statement regarding the nature of the incident and the condition of those involved.
Local businesses in the area have reported disruption, with some customers unable to access shops or leave premises due to the police cordon.
A shop employee near the scene said: “It’s a real shock. We just saw flashing lights and people being turned away from the road. Everyone’s hoping the child is okay—if that’s what’s happened.”
The area remains cordoned off as officers carry out investigations. It is not yet known whether any arrests have been made.
