A heroic Surrey police officer and her loyal police dog have been nominated for the 2025 National Police Bravery Awards after courageously confronting a man armed with a large knife in a public shopping area.

PC Marissa Barwell and PD Ella Praised for Exceptional Courage

On 18 October 2024, PC Marissa Barwell, accompanied by her police dog PD Ella, was the first to arrive on the scene following multiple emergency calls reporting a man threatening members of the public — including children — with a knife.

The incident unfolded on a busy parade of shops, where PC Barwell acted without hesitation, stepping out of her vehicle and placing herself directly between the suspect and the public. The man, described as heavily built and aggressive, brandished the weapon menacingly near an alleyway.

Despite facing a life-threatening situation, PC Barwell maintained a calm but commanding presence, instructing the man to drop the weapon. When he raised the knife and pointed it at her, she held her ground — a decision that allowed time for armed backup to arrive and safely detain the suspect.

Thanks to her actions, no one was injured, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Darren Pemble, Chair of Surrey Police Federation, said:

“Policing is a job like no other. What PC Barwell and PD Ella did was brave beyond words. They responded immediately, placed themselves in danger, and prevented what could have been a fatal incident.

Chief Constable Tim De Meyer added:

“PC Barwell’s bravery, supported by PD Ella, undoubtedly prevented the situation from escalating. Her nomination is more than deserved — it reflects the selflessness and commitment that define our officers.”

National Recognition

The National Police Bravery Awards, run by the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW), celebrate officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, often risking their own lives to protect others.

PC Barwell and PD Ella’s nomination puts them among the country’s most courageous officers, with the ceremony set to take place later this year.
