A security guard was injured during a violent incident near a Co-op store on Anerley Road, London, after attempting to stop suspected thieves. The incident occurred during a book fair next door, and witnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency services arrived.
Violent Attack
According to eyewitness accounts, the security guard was trying to stop a group of suspected thieves when one of the attackers broke a wine bottle and used it as a weapon. The guard was reportedly stabbed in the hand and leg, leaving a trail of blood on the street and nearby parked cars.
A witness at the scene said:
“We tried to help the security by laying him down and raising his leg. We made a makeshift splint for his arm and tried to make pillows and a blanket with bubble wrap.”
Emergency Response
Police arrived around 15 minutes after the incident, followed shortly by an ambulance. Officers took over from bystanders who were providing first aid, and the security guard was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. His condition is currently unknown.
A local resident described the scene:
I was driving down Anerley Road and saw around 30 people standing by the Co-op. It seemed odd, and then about 10 police cars and an ambulance turned up. When I drove back a couple of hours later, the area was still cordoned off.”

The area around the Co-op has been cordoned off, with forensic teams examining the scene. Police are interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence, including reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
