The Metropolitan Police have cordoned off the area around Becontree Heath following a stabbing that has left residents on edge. Images circulating on social media depict a significant police presence in the vicinity.
Police were at about 5.18pm to reports of a man who was stabbed.
Afterwards, a second call was made reporting gunshots.
Police attended and found a man with a stab wound who was taken to hospital, his next of kin has been informed.
A man was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.
Whalebone Lane has been closed from the junction of Wood Lane and Selinas Lane due to the ongoing police activity.
The Becontree Heath Leisure Centre, however, will remain open tonight as a safe space for residents seeking refuge. The local council has assured the public that the situation is under control, and all polling stations are operating as usual. including at the Becontree Methodist Church polling station. Access to the church is available by foot via Wood Lane only.
