In response to recent developments involving senior leadership within Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, an interim assistant chief officer has been appointed to provide additional support during ongoing investigations.
At an extraordinary meeting convened by the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Authority, members unanimously agreed to appoint Samantha Burton to the role of interim assistant chief officer. This decision comes amidst an investigation into the conduct of the current Chief Fire Officer and Assistant Chief Officer, following the emergence of concerning WhatsApp messages reported by ITV News.
The WhatsApp messages, which allegedly contained discussions of harming or killing female colleagues, prompted an urgent need for interim leadership within the fire authority. Samantha Burton, an experienced Area Manager from West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS), will assume the role at the end of the month. Burton brings a wealth of experience, having recently served as Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Expressing her commitment to upholding the values of excellence and integrity within Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, Burton stated, “I’m delighted to be joining colleagues at SFRS. While I understand the Service is going through a difficult time, I’m committed to ensuring this doesn’t define us or impact on how we deliver excellence in Shropshire.”
The decision to appoint an interim assistant chief officer was made during a meeting held on May 8, which was not open to the public. The meeting agenda revealed that the Fire Authority sought approval for interim leadership arrangements while investigations into the allegations against the Chief Fire Officer and Assistant Chief Fire Officer are ongoing.
Chair of the SFRS Fire Authority, Councillor David Minnery, expressed his satisfaction with Burton’s appointment, emphasizing her experience and dedication to delivery. “I’m really very pleased that Samantha has agreed to join us at SFRS. Her experience and focus on delivery will be a tremendous boost for the organization at what is a challenging time for the Service,” stated Minnery.
The investigation into the conduct of senior leaders within Shropshire Fire Service continues, with ITV’s report shedding light on the seriousness of the allegations and their impact on affected individuals. Former Area Manager Jan Morris, one of the individuals mentioned in the disturbing messages, provided insight into the situation during an interview featured in ITV’s report.
The appointment of Samantha Burton represents a pivotal step in maintaining stability and accountability within the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service as investigations progress.
