Seventeen Homes Evacuated after being Flooded by Burst Water main in Southampton
Emergency services rushed to the scene of what is being described as a man-made river gushing down a Southampton Street this morning after a major water main burst. Two Fire crews from Hightown fire station and the Water Support and a Landrover from Fareham a third appliance from St Mary’s were called to Stanier Way in Hedge End Southampton just after 10am this morning. Fire crews were greeted with four-foot of dirty water that had flooded 17 homes in four roads. A specialist crews with an Environmental unit from Romsey also attended as it was unclear if the water was hazardous. A Cordon was put in place and specialist Haz Mat officers from Hampshire fire and rescue were called in after contaminated water and mud floated through the Hedge End housing estate. [tubentertain vid=”rgi9W_F9UCk” autoplay=”0″] Seventeen Homes in Stanier Way, Mallard Gardens and Old Shamblehurst Lane were affected after the main gushed down the residential street. Power has been isolated to the effected home as has the water. Seventy thousand other homes have also been effected as the main had to be shut off. Station commander Nigel Cooper from St Marys Fire and Rescue Service said “The water was deep in areas It was like a flowing river when crews first arrived. I would have said it was must have been about four-foot deep in places. Fire crews using portable pumps and the fire appliances have spent the morning pumping out homes that where knee-deep in water. Fire crews managed to stop the water from flooding a sub station that supply approx 20,000 homes in the area. Power has been isolated to the effected home as has the water. Contractors from Southern Water have also been on site. They have shut off the water main and are attempting to carry out repairs that has left a gaping hole between the pavement and the street. A Spokesman for Southern Water said that other areas have also been effected these included Locks Heath, Sarisbury Green, Park Gate, Swanwick, Whiteley, Fareham and Curdridge after the main burst. It is believed for a short time that 70,000 home were left without a supply. The water supply was restored to the effected homes just after 3pm this afternoon after a diversion was made within the network.
