In a month marked by a series of shocking criminal activities, several individuals from South London have been sentenced for their involvement in crimes ranging from violent disorder to drug dealing and attempted murder. Here are the names and faces of the men who judges have put behind bars in August 2024.
Callum Flynn
Callum Flynn, 29, a scaffolder from Belgravia Gardens in Bromley, has been sentenced to eight months in prison after pleading guilty to violent disorder. Flynn was involved in the “Enough is Enough” demonstration near Downing Street on July 31, where he kicked a metal barrier and tried to push through a police cordon. Despite claiming he attended to protest UK border policy and not as a far-right supporter, Flynn’s actions led to his imprisonment.
Krisma Anthony
Former British Army soldier Krisma Anthony, 23, of Repository Road in Charlton, has been sentenced to 27 years for attempted murder. Anthony viciously attacked tourist Tharel Thompson, 29, from Barbados, during a nightclub dispute in Reading. The brutal stabbing left Thompson with life-changing injuries. Anthony’s conviction came after damning CCTV footage showed him stabbing Thompson through the skull.
Alfie Arrowsmith
Alfie Arrowsmith, 28, a roofer from Maiden Lane in Crayford, was jailed for 16 months after pleading guilty to violent disorder. Arrowsmith participated in the “Enough is Enough” protest, where he squared up to police officers and attempted to provoke them. Arrowsmith had no prior convictions and claimed his actions were a result of frustration with the situation.
Jose Reis
Jose Reis, 55, of Walpole Road in Colliers Wood, was sentenced to three years and 10 months for his role in running a £1 million network of Brazilian brothels. Reis, a former restaurateur, was identified as a key figure in operating multiple brothels across London. He was responsible for managing the properties and laundering the profits from the illegal activities.
Tony Curant and Richard Ray
Tony Curant, 33, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 20 years for the brutal murder of Leila Young, the mother of his children. Curant stabbed Young 57 times while their children hid in a nearby room. Richard Ray, 34, was sentenced to 18 months for helping Curant escape the scene. The horrifying crime has left Young’s family devastated.
David Spring
David Spring, 61, of Longfellow Road in Sutton, received an 18-month sentence for his role in a right-wing violent disorder near Downing Street. Spring was part of a group that confronted police officers during the July 31 demonstration, where he was captured on video making threatening gestures and chanting offensive slogans.
Trevor Hooper
Trevor Hooper, 59, of Bradford Close in Bromley, was jailed for two years and ten months for defrauding a friend out of £37,000 in a fake investment scheme. Hooper convinced his friend to invest in bogus opportunities, including gold and diamonds, resulting in the victim losing his life savings.
Ardley Wray
Ardley Wray, 59, of Bedivere Road in Bromley, was sentenced to five years and seven months for drug dealing. Wray attempted to evade arrest by throwing a bin liner of drugs out of his car window during a police chase. Officers recovered £7,000 worth of drugs, and Wray was apprehended after a foot chase.
Anthony Matthews
Anthony Matthews, 43, of Lovelace Green in Eltham, was jailed for three years and one month for domestic abuse offenses, including grievous bodily harm and making threats to kill. Matthews violently attacked his ex-partner, leaving her with a fractured arm and strangulation injuries. He also harassed her with over 3,000 phone calls in just 12 days.
Nam Nguyen
Nam Nguyen, 27, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 17 years, with an additional four-year extended sentence, for a harrowing campaign of abuse. Nguyen held a woman captive in a flat in Tulse Hill for 10 days, subjecting her to repeated physical and emotional abuse, including rape. The woman eventually escaped by jumping out of a window.
Amir Tofangsazan
Amir Tofangsazan, 36, of Sidney Road in Brixton, a known catfish conman, was jailed for 10 months after breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order. Tofangsazan used dating apps to deceive women, posing as a barrister or surgeon and tricked them into giving him money. He was arrested after attending a speed dating event, violating his court order.
Rogel Dumitru
Rogel Dumitru, 20, of Mayplace Road East in Bexleyheath, was sentenced to seven and a half years for his role in a home invasion. Dumitru and his accomplices broke into a house in Chatham, armed with weapons, and terrorized the family inside. He was caught after police linked his DNA to a mask found at the scene.
Sean Francis McGranaghan
Sean Francis McGranaghan, 33, of Kilmartin Avenue in Norbury, was found guilty of sending sexual messages to children. McGranaghan contacted undercover officers posing as minors and was arrested at Gatwick Airport. He was convicted on charges of attempting sexual communication with a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Avram Stoica
Avram Stoica, 19, of Pretoria Road in Romford, was jailed for four months after stealing £8,000 worth of iPhones from the Apple store at The Glades in Bromley. Stoica was identified through surveillance footage and was arrested and charged with theft from a shop.
Roberto Rossi
Roberto Rossi, 37, of Hollingbourne Avenue in Bexleyheath, and his girlfriend Joanne Branscombe, 44, were convicted of drug dealing offences. Rossi was sentenced to 16 months in prison after a search revealed a substantial stash of drugs. Branscombe received a 22-month suspended sentence for her involvement.
