A security alert in the Ranaghan Road area of Maghera concluded Wednesday evening, with the Police Service Northern Ireland making an arrest.
The incident, which began earlier last night, prompted the evacuation of several homes as a precautionary measure. Residents were temporarily displaced while law enforcement officers executed a thorough investigation of the area.
According to Detective Inspector Fenton, a man in his 50s was arrested on multiple serious charges. The suspect is currently in police custody, facing allegations of:
- Possessing explosives under suspicious circumstances
- Cultivating cannabis
- Possession of a Class B controlled drug
By early evening, the security alert had been fully resolved. Residents were permitted to return to their homes, and all previously closed roads were reopened to traffic.
“Although the security alert has ended, officers remain at the scene and our enquiries are continuing,” Detective Inspector Fenton stated. He also expressed gratitude to the local community, acknowledging the inconvenience caused and praising residents for their patience and understanding.
Police have indicated that a further update will be provided in due course as their investigation progresses.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details have been released at this time.
