In a tragic incident that unfolded on Friday evening, a 14-year-old boy lost his life following a stabbing in Tavistock Square, Harpurhey. The Greater Manchester Police swiftly responded to the distressing call at approximately 18.05 on September 15, 2023.
Emergency services, including paramedics, rushed to the scene to provide immediate medical assistance. Despite their efforts, the young victim succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital. Family Liaison Officers are now offering support to the grieving family during this incredibly challenging period.
A 14-year-old boy has been apprehended by the police on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody for questioning. As the investigation unfolds, a cordoned-off area remains in place, allowing officers to thoroughly examine the scene and gather evidence.
In response to this tragic incident, Greater Manchester Police has enacted a Section 60 authority. This additional measure came into effect at 20.26 BST on Friday, September 15, 2023, and will remain in place until 20.26 BST on Saturday, September 16, 2023. The Section 60 authority grants officers the power to stop and search individuals in North Manchester within designated areas
Detective Superintendent Phil Key expressed his condolences, saying, “Firstly I would like to share my deepest condolences with the family at this unbelievably difficult time. Our Family Liaison Officers are currently working with them, and we will continue to support the family throughout this extremely troubling period.”
He further explained the rationale behind the Section 60 authority, stating, “A Section 60 authority has been put in place which will run for 24 hours…we have taken this course of action to keep the public who live and work within the vicinity of the incident safe. We understand the use of a Section 60 can cause concern to local residents; however, we use these powers only when proportionate and necessary. By enforcing the Section 60 in the area, we will work to minimise any violent behavior and prevent any further serious incidents going forward as our main priority is to keep the public safe.”
