In a troubling development highlighting the ongoing security failures at HMP Sudbury, authorities are once again appealing for public assistance after another inmate has absconded from the open prison. Andrew Bowering, a 30-year-old serving a nine-year sentence for aggravated burglary, walked out of the facility on September 10, just days after Raymond McMahon disappeared from the same prison.
Bowering, described as white, 5ft 4ins tall, with a medium build and blonde hair, was last seen wearing glasses, grey joggers, a dark blue jacket with light blue sleeves, and white trainers.
The public is being urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of Bowering to the police immediately.
HMP Sudbury, an open prison, has come under increased scrutiny after more than 100 inmates have absconded in recent years. The alarming trend has led to growing public concern, especially as some of those who have escaped were convicted of serious offences.
Since 2018, nearly 600 inmates — including violent offenders and sex offenders — have absconded from open jails across the UK. Among them, 133 were serving sentences for violent crimes such as manslaughter and murder, and 21 were convicted sex offenders.
As the search for both Bowering and McMahon continues, the situation at HMP Sudbury raises further questions about the effectiveness of the prison’s security measures and the risks posed to the public by the increasing number of absconding inmates.
Authorities are appealing to anyone with information regarding Andrew Bowering’s whereabouts to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
