A second fatality has been confirmed following a tragic collision on the A19 near Sunderland. The incident, which occurred on March 24, 2025, initially claimed the life of a woman in her 70s. Now, a woman in her 40s who was also involved in the crash has succumbed to her injuries, leaving the community in shock and prompting renewed concerns over road safety on this vital North East route.
Collision Details: What Happened on March 24?
The incident took place at approximately 11:30 AM on the A19 northbound, near the Nissan factory in Washington, close to the A1290 junction. Northumbria Police reported that the crash involved a white MAN goods vehicle and a blue Vauxhall Mokka.
Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and fire crews, responded swiftly to the scene. The driver of the Vauxhall Mokka, a woman in her 70s, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead despite efforts by paramedics.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said they dispatched two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a rapid response paramedic, a duty officer, and two Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) crews. Initially, one patient was transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital.
The passenger, a woman in her 40s, also sustained injuries and was taken to hospital. She was later discharged but tragically passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
Northumbria Police confirmed that both women’s next of kin are receiving support from specially trained officers.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the collision. The goods vehicle driver remained at the scene and is assisting with enquiries. Police are appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage to help establish the events leading to the crash.
A police spokesperson urged the public to share information via social media direct messages, the force’s live chat, or their website. The A19 was closed between the A1231 at Hylton and the A1290 for around five hours to facilitate the investigation. The northbound carriageway reopened at 9:10 PM.
