A large-scale emergency response unfolded this afternoon in Gravesend, Kent, after two children were reported in difficulty in the River Thames. While a young boy was rescued and taken to hospital, the search for a missing girl has now been suspended, police confirm.
Boy Pulled From Water – Girl Still Missing
Emergency services were alerted at around 1.35pm today (May 30), with Kent Police, HM Coastguard, RNLI Gravesend, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and the Metropolitan Police all responding to reports of two children entering the river near Royal Pier Road.
The boy was recovered from the water and transported to a local hospital for treatment. His current condition remains unknown.
Despite extensive efforts, the search for the missing girl was called off in the early evening hours, though authorities say operations may resume depending on conditions.
HM Coastguard Statement
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:
“We responded to a report of two children in difficulty in the water near Royal Terrace Pier, Gravesend. The alarm was raised at about 1.35pm.
One child has been recovered, and the search for a second child has now been suspended.”
Emergency Scene at Royal Pier Terrace
The scene remains highly active with multiple emergency vehicles stationed near Royal Pier Terrace and the Port of London Authority (PLA) office.

A cordon remains in place at the junction of Commercial Place, The Terrace, and Milton Place, while a fitness area by Gordon Promenade is also taped off.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing up to four vessels, including police and RNLI boats, searching the waters between Royal Terrace Pier and Town Pier.
Officers are stationed along the riverbank and used a Thermal Drone to search the water.

The parents of the children have been informed, police say.
