Gardaí are intensifying efforts to locate the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run incident in Dublin last night that claimed the life of a woman in her 60s. The tragic collision occurred on Phibsborough Road in north Dublin, where the woman was out socialising with her husband.
The incident unfolded just after 21.00 when the vehicle, identified as an 07D Silver Honda Civic, reportedly sped through the junction of the Cross Guns Bridge onto Phibsborough Road. Tragically, the woman, who had been enjoying a meal with her husband, a retired garda, was struck while crossing the road to catch a bus home. The car did not stop, leaving the woman fatally injured.
CCTV footage captured the moments leading up to the crash, aiding investigators in understanding the circumstances. The abandoned car was later recovered on nearby Avondale Road. Gardaí are conducting a forensic examination on the vehicle, which appears to have been recently purchased but not registered. Efforts are underway to trace the current owner.
The scene of the hit-and-run has been sealed off for forensic examination, and no arrests have been made at this point. Gardaí at Mountjoy are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to come forward, particularly those in the area between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm last night.
While a criminal investigation is underway, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is conducting a separate inquiry into the conduct of the gardaí who interacted with the vehicle before the incident. GSOC received a referral from An Garda Síochána, and the matter is currently under examination.
