A reckless motorists who ignored warning lights at an automatic level crossing between Rye and Ashford International has caused serious damage to the crossing’s control systems, leading to widespread disruption to both rail and road traffic.
The incident happened at around 9:00pm on Tuesday evening, when the driver ran the gauntlet of the closing barriers, narrowly avoiding a collision but destroying part of the mechanism in the process.
Engineers were unable to access the site immediately due to severe traffic congestion caused by the crossing failure, delaying repair work. The barriers remain out of service, forcing the closure of all rail lines through the area.
Train services halted
Southern Rail confirmed that:
-
Services from Eastbourne towards Ashford International are terminating at Rye before returning to Eastbourne.
-
No trains are operating between Rye and Ashford International in either direction, affecting Appledore and Ham Street stations.
Replacement buses have been requested, but operators warn that road traffic congestion around the scene will significantly delay journeys.
Passengers have been advised they can use Southeastern services between Hastings and Tonbridge, and between Tonbridge and Ashford International, although these do not call at Rye, Appledore, or Ham Street.
Southern Rail has urged passengers to allow at least an extra 60 minutes for travel.
