In a significant development that has raised concerns globally, a senior Russian diplomat has stated that Moscow would only resume nuclear tests if the United States were to initiate such actions first. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that if the US were to conduct a nuclear test, Russia would be compelled to “mirror” that action.
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which was adopted in 1996, prohibits nuclear explosions anywhere in the world. However, despite being signed by both Russian and US presidents, the treaty has never been fully implemented due to the lack of ratification by the US.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow could consider rescinding its 2000 decision to ratify the bill. While some experts have discussed the necessity of conducting nuclear tests, Putin clarified that he had not yet formed an opinion on the matter.
These statements have fuelled concerns that Russia may resume nuclear testing as a means to dissuade the West from extending military support to Ukraine. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has escalated tensions in the region, with fears of further aggression and destabilisation.
