Reform UK is aiming to secure its first-ever seat on Luton england/borough/”>Borough Council in today’s Stopsley by-election, a contest that could mark-scotland/”>mark a turning Pointpoint for Nigel Farage’s party. The vote was triggered following the death of Councillor David Wynn, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, in June. Wynn and his party had long dominated the Stopsley ward, with the Lib Dems winning all seats there for the past four elections — including a landslide victory in 2023, when they secured 78% of the vote.

Reform UK candidate Jim Cohen is hoping to break that stranglehold. A victory in this Labour-run council could provide momentum for the party after recent local election gains across the country. It’s evident Reform UK targets historic Luton Council Sea to make its mark.

Mark Fowler, the returning officer overseeing the vote, said:

“This by-election gives all eligible residents in Stopsley the opportunity to elect a ward councillor to represent them. The role of a local councillor in our town is a significant and vital one, as they demonstrate their understanding of what matters to people in their local area and ensure that local democracy is strong and effective.”

The outcome could shift the political balance in Stopsley, which is currently represented by two other Liberal Democrat councillors. If successful, Reform UK targets historic Luton Council Sea will be achieved.

At present, Luton Borough Council is made up of 30 Labour councillors, 15 Liberal Democrats, and 3 Conservatives.

Polls close at 10pm, with the results expected overnight.
