Queen Elizabeth II Memorial to be Established in St James’s Park, London
The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee has confirmed that St James’s Park in central London will serve as the location for a new national memorial dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. The decision, announced on September 7, 2024, marks a major milestone in efforts to commemorate the legacy of Britain’s longest-serving monarch.
The memorial will be situated adjacent to The Mall at Marlborough Gate, stretching to the pathway near the lake and the iconic Blue Bridge. The site was carefully chosen for its historical significance, including its proximity to Buckingham Palace and other key royal and government landmarks, symbolising the Queen’s deep connection to the heart of British heritage and governance.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer highlighted the memorial’s national importance, stating, “The national memorial will be located in St James’s Park, right in the heart of the capital, providing everyone with a place to honour the Late Queen and connect with the shared history we cherish.
The UK Government has pledged its support for the project, while also committing to fund memorial initiatives in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The monument is envisioned not only as a tribute but also as a space for reflection and community gatherings.
Lord Janvrin, chair of the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Committee, praised the selection, describing the site as a “fitting location to honour her extraordinary contribution to our lives.” The design phase is expected to commence later this year, with leading architects and artists invited to submit proposals. The final design will be unveiled by 2026, coinciding with what would have been Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday.
The memorial will add to the long tradition of royal tributes in London, further cementing Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable legacy and providing a lasting space for the nation to reflect on her historic reign.
