Emergency services have been called to the QE2 Bridge on Christmas Day following reports of a tanker carrying a large quantity of gasoline becoming involved in an incident beneath the structure.
The bridge has been closed as fire crews and police work to manage the situation. Essex Fire and Rescue and Essex Police were alerted to the incident at around 10:50pm., with National Highways implementing traffic control measures to mitigate disruption.
A contraflow system is being established to allow limited movement across the Dartford Crossing.
The incident, described as "prolonged," has also led to the introduction of height restrictions for vehicles accessing the area while emergency teams continue their operations.
A spokesperson for National Highways said:
"We are working closely with other agencies to address the situation and ensure public safety. We advise all motorists to avoid the area if possible and follow official updates."
National Highways has urged drivers to check for alternative routes and expect significant delays as crews work to secure the scene and assess the risks posed by the tanker.
Further details have not yet been released, and the cause of the incident remains unclear. Both Essex Police and Essex Fire and Rescue have been contacted for additional information.
Motorists and residents are advised to monitor updates from official channels as the situation develops.
