A prisoner has been convicted of murdering a fellow inmate in a brutal attack at HMP Maidstone. Sasan Rabat, 26, was found guilty of killing 24-year-old Stefan Adi in his cell during a violent assault on 9 December 2021.
Prison staff discovered Rabat sitting on a bed in his cell, while Mr Adi was found fatally wounded, hidden under blankets and towels in the corner of the room. Rabat had used furniture, including a locker and a table, in an attempt to conceal the body. Mr Adi had suffered multiple puncture wounds to his throat and severe head injuries.
Among the items recovered from the scene were a broken chair and the shattered remains of a ceramic toilet lid, both of which had been used as weapons in the attack. Medical crews confirmed Mr Adi was deceased at the scene.
Following his arrest, Rabat claimed he acted in self-defence, stating that Mr Adi had entered his cell and threatened him with a razor blade. However, Rabat was charged with murder and held in custody pending his trial.
At Maidstone Crown Court, Rabat admitted to killing Mr Adi but argued a defence of diminished responsibility. On Friday, 13 September 2024, a jury unanimously found Rabat guilty of murder. Sentencing will take place at a later date.
Detective Inspector Ross Gurden, who led the investigation, described the attack as one of “indescribable brutality,” stating: “Rabat beat his victim with such ferocity that he stood no chance of surviving. Rabat has shown no remorse for his horrific actions, and our thoughts remain with Mr. Adi’s family as they continue to cope with their tragic loss.”
The murder has sent shockwaves through the prison, highlighting the extreme violence that can occur even within secure facilities.
