Sussex Police have issued a warning to the public after receiving reports of two fraudsters posing as charity workers at Acorn Retail Park in Crawley.
According to officers, two white females in their early 20s have been approaching members of the public, claiming to collect donations for charity. However, authorities have confirmed that the charity is fake.
One victim agreed to donate £10, only to later discover that £100 had been taken instead.
The suspects have been pretending to be deaf to gain the trust of potential donors. Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and ensure they are donating only to legitimate organisations.
How to Protect Yourself from Charity Fraud
- Verify the charity – Always check if a charity is registered with the Charity Commission.
- Be cautious of street collectors – If approached, ask for identification or visit the charity’s official website to donate instead.
- Check payment details – Avoid making cash donations or providing bank details to strangers.
- Report suspicious activity – If you suspect fraud, report it to Action Fraud or call 101.
