Police have issued CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with a major railway trespassing incident at Hendon station that resulted in nearly £1 million in costs and widespread disruption for rail passengers.
Incident Details
On Thursday, January 16, a man was seen leaving the platform at Hendon station and walking almost one kilometre north along the Midland Main Line.
The disruption was immediate and severe, leading to:
- 16 trains fully cancelled
- 54 trains partially cancelled
- More than £550,000 in delay minute costs, according to Network Rail estimates
Police Investigation & Public Appeal
British Transport Police (BTP) and Network Rail are working together to identify the trespasser, warning that railway lines are highly dangerous and that such behaviour can have serious legal and financial consequences.
Network Rail Warning
Dan Matthews, Operations Director for Network Rail East Midlands, emphasized the serious risks involved:
“The railway is an extremely dangerous place. Anyone who trespasses is breaking the law, putting themselves at serious risk, and causing major disruption to the network.
He added:
“We have to stop trains when a trespasser is reported, which leads to major knock-on delays affecting thousands of passengers. In busy areas like Hendon, this can escalate quickly.”
Financial Impact
Beyond the immediate travel chaos, Network Rail estimates that the incident cost the taxpayer over £1 million when factoring in operational delays and financial losses.
