Police impose conditions against Trump protest processions

Conditions imposed on protest processions set to take place on Saturday, 14 July In order to prevent serious disorder and disruption to Londoners, conditions have been imposed on the ‘Welcome Trump’ procession, under Section 12 of the Public Order Act 1996. The protest group ‘Welcome Trump’ has stated its intention to hold a procession from the US Embassy to Whitehall, where it will join the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ rally at this location. Conditions are also being imposed on a counter demonstration to oppose the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ rally, under Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1996. Both events are due to take place on Saturday 14 July. The conditions have been imposed due to concerns of serious public disorder and disruption to the community. A recent event involving the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ group on June 9, resulted in serious violence in central London, with bottles, metal barriers and other objects thrown at police officers. Five officers suffered injuries and there were nine arrests. A significant policing operation will be in place for the duration of both events on 14 July, which is designed to prevent trouble from flaring up and facilitate peaceful protest, whilst ensuring Londoners are not unduly impacted. Dedicated teams of highly flexible officers will be on standby at key locations in the Capital. Police Liaison Officers will be present to assist with engagement for peaceful protest. Chief Superintendent Elaine Van-Orden, said: "We police hundreds of public events and demonstrations in Central London every year and we always facilitate peaceful protest. We have such serious concerns about this event on Saturday 14 July, that we have made the decision to impose conditions under the Public Order Act. We have a duty to ensure that the community can go about their daily business not unduly impacted by demonstrations taking place. Our message is simple: if you wish to protest peacefully, that is your right and we want to work with you. If you commit criminal acts or breach the conditions of the event, you are liable to be arrested." Details of the conditions imposed under Section 12 Public Order Act 1986: Welcome Trump Rally/Free Tommy Robinson protest 14th July 2018 In order to prevent serious disorder and serious disruption to the community the following conditions apply to the procession relating to "Welcome Trump" and the "Free Tommy Robinson" protest. Any procession must: -The march must form up and start at Temple Place -The form up must not commence before 13:00hrs. -Any procession must commence between 13:00hrs and 14:00hrs. -The route of the procession must follow the following route: Temple Place, Embankment, Northumberland Avenue, Whitehall Place and Whitehall. Any other march that is associated with Welcome Trump and free Tommy Robinson cause will contravene the section 12 Public Order Act conditions. No motor vehicles as part of the procession. If you take part in any procession at this location, you must adhere to these conditions and failure to do so may lead to arrest and prosecution. The conditions may be subject to change by the senior officer present – if in doubt please consult a police officer. Details of the conditions imposed under Section 14 Public Order Act 1986: Oppose the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ rally 14th July 2018 In order to prevent serious disorder, serious disruption to the community and prevent intimidation to others, the following conditions have been placed upon any assembly that has been advertised to oppose the Free Tommy Robinson rally in Whitehall on the 14 July 2018. Any participant must: -Assemble in Parliament Street, South of the police barrier across the road -Any assembly must start no earlier than noon and finish at or before 18:30hrs. -If you take part in any assembly at this location, you must adhere to these conditions and failure to do so may lead to arrest and prosecution. The conditions may be subject to change by the senior officer present – if in doubt please consult a police officer. These conditions do not apply to the advertised march organised by ‘Stand Up to Racism’ in Old Palace Yard, commencing at 13:00hrs and concluding at 14:00hrs.
