Police arrest Man in connection with Woking Robbery

Surrey Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses following the arrest of a man in connection a robbery at the home of Joyce Burgess in Woking. Mrs Burgess, aged 84, passed away in hospital in the early hours of Tuesday 10 July, following a robbery at her home in Loop Road at approximately 5.30pm on Saturday 7 July. Superintendent Graham Barnett said: “Firstly I’d like to thank the public for their support in the last week as we’ve had a positive reaction to our witness appeals. We are continuing to support Mrs Burgess’ family who remain in our thoughts following their tragic loss. “Our enquiries at present are focusing on the movements of the man before and after this attack. We have reason to believe he may have been sofa surfing in the wider Woking area recently and is not necessarily local to Woking and so may be recognisable because he may be an infrequent presence in the community. “If the description we’ve provided matches someone who you’ve played host to in the Woking area we need to hear from you as a matter of urgency. It’s also vital that you tell us if you know where this person might have been staying and when – any information could prove crucial, irrespective of how minor you think it might be. “We are obviously at a stage where we are unable to say more while we continue this investigation and appreciate the public’s support in helping us find who was responsible.” The man has been described as: White Of a slim build Around 5ft 8 to 6ft tall Light brown hair in a curtains-style. He was clean shaven and spoke with an English accent. The arrested man, from the Epsom area and in his 20s, has been arrested in connection with three burglaries in the Westfield area of Woking that took place over the weekend of July 7/8 and the robbery of Mrs Joyce. He was also arrested in connection with a burglary in the East Surrey area. He has been released under investigation while officers continue with their enquiries. Officers are appealing for witnesses to any suspicious activity in the area between 5.15pm and 6pm. The man entered her home via her front door engaging her in conversation and asked for a glass of water. A struggle then ensued as he stole Mrs Burgess’ handbag. Mrs Burgess suffered injuries to her arms, chest and face during the attack. He left the area in a white vehicle heading towards Vicarage Road. A post mortem completed on Wednesday, 11 July revealed the cause of death due to coronary and valvular heart disease, bronchial pneumonia and emphysema. Anyone with any information should contact Surrey Police on 101 (999 in an emergency) or use report.police.uk and quote the reference number PR/45180072321. Alternatively please call the independent charity Crimestoppers which can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111. They do not ask for any details and are independent of the police.
