A horrific terrorist attack unfolded in New Orleans’ French Quarter early Wednesday, as a white Ford SUV plowed into crowds of revelers celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street. The rampage left 10 people dead and 30 others injured, in an incident that the FBI is now investigating as an act of terrorism.
The tragedy occurred around 3:15 a.m. local time when the SUV, rented through the Turo car-sharing app, struck pedestrians. The driver, who has not yet been publicly identified, exited the vehicle and began firing at police, injuring two officers. Law enforcement returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.
Mystery Object Fuels Speculation
Images of the suspect’s vehicle circulating online have sparked widespread speculation, particularly over a flagpole mounted at the back of the SUV. Initially appearing to hold a black flag earlier in the evening, it was later photographed with what seemed to be a metallic gray jacket draped over it.
Louisiana Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser confirmed that investigators are exploring potential links to ISIS, given the presence of the flag and the calculated nature of the attack.
Improvised Explosive Device Found
Adding to the gravity of the situation, officials reported discovering an improvised explosive device (IED) in the vicinity. The device detonated shortly after 8:30 a.m. but caused no additional injuries, thanks to prompt intervention by the bomb squad.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the suspect as “hellbent on creating carnage,” with behavior indicating a deliberate intent to inflict maximum harm. Witnesses claim the suspect was wearing full body armor and was armed with an assault rifle.
National Leaders Respond
President Joe Biden condemned the attack as an act of “pure evil” and confirmed that federal resources are being deployed to assist New Orleans authorities.
“There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on our communities,” Biden said in a statement.
President-elect Donald Trump also commented, taking to Truth Social to extend support to the victims and criticize border policies. Trump linked the attack to broader issues of illegal immigration, as the vehicle reportedly entered the U.S. from Mexico two days earlier.
Witness Accounts Paint Chaotic Scene
Eyewitnesses described the chaos as the SUV sped through the crowded streets of the French Quarter. Kevin Garcia, 22, recounted, “The car was slamming into everyone on the left side of Bourbon Street. I saw a body flying toward me.”
Videos shared on social media captured the aftermath, showing casualties on the ground as panicked partygoers fled the area. Paramedics transported victims to five local hospitals, while the FBI took over the investigation.
City in Mourning
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell called the incident a terrorist attack, emphasizing the resilience of the city.
“We will not let this tragedy define us. Our city will heal and emerge stronger,” she stated.
The attack has left the French Quarter, known for its vibrant nightlife and rich history, in shock. Bourbon Street remains cordoned off as investigators work to piece together the details of this devastating event.
