Regular closures on the Piccadilly line are set to continue through at least mid-October, Transport for London (TfL) has announced, as part of a long-term upgrade project preparing the line for a new fleet of trains.
The line, which serves thousands of commuters daily between Heathrow, central London, and Cockfosters, has already faced frequent weekend and night-time closures since late 2024. Now, TfL has released an extended list of planned disruptions, confirming the inconvenience will stretch well into the autumn.
Why the Closures?
The closures are needed to accommodate essential works ahead of the rollout of brand-new, air-conditioned, walk-through Piccadilly line trains, with the first expected to enter service by the end of 2025. These trains are part of a broader initiative to modernise the ageing fleet and improve capacity, accessibility, and passenger comfort.
A TfL spokesperson said:
“We understand the ongoing closures are frustrating, but they are essential to deliver the improvements needed to bring the new trains into service safely. We appreciate customers’ patience as we work to modernise one of the busiest lines on the Underground.

What This Means for Passengers
The ongoing closures will continue to impact key commuter, airport, and night-time routes, particularly on weekends and Fridays. TfL advises passengers to check journey planners regularly, allow extra travel time, and use alternative lines such as the Central and Jubilee where possible.
Reactions and Next Steps
While many Londoners welcome the long-overdue train upgrades, the extended closure schedule has caused frustration among commuters and local businesses.
“I get the need for upgrades,” said one regular Piccadilly line user at King’s Cross. “But the constant weekend closures are exhausting—it’s a guessing game every Friday night.”
TfL has pledged to keep disruptions as limited and predictable as possible, promising improved services once the new fleet is introduced.
