Severe disruption is expected across the Piccadilly Line today after a major fire broke out overnight in a block of railway arches in South Harrow, affecting the structural integrity of the line above.
The blaze, which began shortly after 1am near Roxeth Green Avenue, involved multiple railway arches and commercial units including vehicle workshops. More than 100 firefighters and 15 engines were deployed by the London Fire Brigade to bring the incident under control.
Underground Line Suspended in South Harrow Area
Due to the scale of the fire and its location directly beneath the elevated tracks, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that Piccadilly Line services through South Harrow are suspended and warned that the disruption could last into the afternoon.
Structural assessments are being carried out to determine whether it is safe to resume train services. Delays and partial line closures are likely until a full safety clearance is given.
Commuters are being advised to:
- Check the TfL website or app before travelling
- Use alternative routes via the Metropolitan or Jubilee lines
- Allow extra journey time during the morning and lunchtime peak periods
Firefighting and Recovery Efforts Continue
Crews remain at the scene as of Thursday morning, continuing to damp down hotspots and assess fire damage. Two 32-metre turntable ladders and a drone unit have been deployed to fight the fire from above and support the incident commander.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“We’re working hard to bring the fire under control and ensure the safety of surrounding infrastructure. The line running above the fire is currently suspended as a precaution.
Travel Alternatives
Passengers heading into central London are being urged to re-plan journeys and consider alternative travel options from North Harrow, Rayners Lane, or Wembley.
