A man has been formally charged after a car ploughed into crowds gathered for Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, injuring more than 60 people including a nine-year-old child, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.
Paul Doyle, 53, from Liverpool, has been charged with dangerous driving, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, wounding with intent to cause GBH, and attempting to cause GBH with intent following the shocking incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre on Monday, 26 May 2025.
Dozens Injured in Parade Horror
The crash occurred during celebrations of Liverpool FC’s title triumph, with thousands of fans lining the streets. According to police, 65 people were injured, with over 50 taken to hospital, and seven still receiving treatment as of Wednesday.
Victims range in age from 9 to 78 years old, and all are believed to be British nationals. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital was among several facilities to receive casualties, with medical staff praising the response as “very, very fortunate” given the potential scale of the disaster.
Shocking Scenes Captured on Video
Footage widely circulated on social media shows members of the crowd trying to confront the driver before he suddenly accelerated into both sides of the street. Some onlookers attempted to chase down the vehicle, with others seen kicking and smashing the car’s rear window in the immediate aftermath.
Investigators believe the car managed to enter the restricted area after temporarily following an ambulance that was attending a medical emergency involving a heart attack. A roadblock was lifted, allowing the suspect vehicle to pass behind emergency responders.

Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill said officers were continuing to gather witness statements and video evidence:
This was a deeply distressing incident during what should have been a moment of celebration for the city. We are committed to securing justice for those affected.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed Doyle was charged on Wednesday 29 May, following a detailed investigation. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
