Parents Warned of £1,000 Fines for Common School Run Driving Mistakes

As children return to school this week, parents are being cautioned that the dreaded school run could result in hefty fines if they make simple driving mistakes. While morning traffic may be stressful, driving experts are reminding parents to be mindful of the Highway Code, with fines of up to £1,000 for certain violations.

Ben Pitcher, owner of DPF Experts, highlighted the importance of safe driving during the school run. “By being aware of these common mistakes and how much you can be penalised for them, parents can avoid unnecessary fines and ensure a safer journey for everyone involved—especially as the beginning of the academic year can be such a hectic time for parents and children alike,” Pitcher said.

Here are the key mistakes drivers should avoid during the school run:

  1. Using the Horn Inappropriately – £1,000 Fine While honking in frustration may be tempting during heavy school run traffic, it could lead to a fine of up to £1,000 if taken to court. According to Rule 112 of the Highway Code, the horn can only be used to alert others to your presence or an immediate danger. A fixed penalty notice for improper use of the horn is £50, but the fine can rise significantly if the case goes to court.
  2. Driving Through a Bus Lane – £80 Fine Parents running late might be tempted to cut through a bus lane, but this common mistake could result in an £80 fine, which can double to £160 in London. Rule 141 of the Highway Code prohibits unauthorised vehicles from using bus lanes, and drivers caught violating this rule risk a penalty.
  3. Leaving the Engine Running Outside School – £80 Fine Idling outside a school while waiting for children is a common sight, especially in cold weather. However, Rule 123 of the Highway Code prohibits leaving the engine running unnecessarily when stationary on a public road. This not only wastes fuel but also contributes to environmental pollution, potentially leading to an £80 fine.
  4. Children Not Wearing Seat Belts Properly – £500 Fine Ensuring that children are securely strapped in with seat belts is crucial, as the driver is responsible for any passengers under 14 years old. Failure to comply with Rule 99 of the Highway Code could result in a £500 fine for the driver if children are not properly secured.
  5. Parking on Zig-Zag Lines Outside Schools – £70 Fine Parking on the yellow zig-zag lines outside schools is not only illegal but dangerous, as it obstructs visibility for children crossing the road. Rule 243 of the Highway Code makes it clear that stopping or parking in these zones risks a £70 fine, with the aim of ensuring child safety during busy drop-off and pick-up times.

By following these rules, parents can avoid penalties and contribute to safer journeys for everyone during the busy school run season.
