A man has been sentenced to prison following a Thames Valley Police investigation into a robbery at an Oxford auction house that took place nearly two years ago.
Suhail Mitha, 33, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to a count of robbery at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday, 18 March.
The robbery occurred on 25 April 2023, around midday, when Mitha and accomplice Adil Khan targeted a valuable ring at an auctioneers on St. Michaels Street, Oxford. The ring was later sold for £48,000.
Security Guard Injured in Attempted Theft
During the incident, Adil Khan entered the auction house and attempted to steal the ring. A security controller intervened, managing to prevent Khan from fleeing, but sustained a bitten hand, bruising, and a damaged watch during the struggle.
Meanwhile, Mitha remained outside in a getaway car, initially watching the scene unfold. CCTV footage showed him approaching the auction house door, then hesitating and returning to his vehicle before driving out of Oxford without further involvement in the confrontation.
Swift Arrest and Sentencing of Accomplice
Adil Khan was arrested at the scene and charged the following day. He was sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment and made subject to a Serious Violence Prevention Order at a hearing on 30 June 2023 at Oxford Crown Court.
Following further investigation, Suhail Mitha was charged on 12 October 2024, and has now been brought to justice.
Police Praise Investigative Efforts
Thames Valley Police have welcomed the conclusion of the case, which they say highlights their commitment to pursuing all parties involved in serious crime.
A spokesperson said:
“This sentencing sends a clear message that even those who attempt to distance themselves from violent offences will be held accountable. We’re pleased that both individuals responsible for this robbery have now faced justice.”
