A major cannabis cultivation site has been uncovered in Ramsgate following a proactive police operation that led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man.
Kent Police officers, responding to reports of suspicious activity, made the discovery during routine patrols around 2pm on Wednesday, 23 April, in Broad Street, Ramsgate. Inside a disused commercial building, officers found what is believed to be more than 1,000 cannabis plants, indicating a large-scale illegal grow operation.
The suspect, seen in the vicinity of the building as officers arrived, was arrested on suspicion of cultivating a Class B drug. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
Tampered Utilities and Safety Concerns
Police also found that electricity and water supplies had been dangerously bypassed, a common tactic used in illegal cannabis operations. Engineers were immediately called to the scene to assess and secure the area.
Kent Police confirmed that officers remain at the site to safely dismantle the operation and ensure the building is no longer a hazard to the community.
Police Statement
Inspector Richard Batten of Kent Police praised the alertness and local knowledge of the Ramsgate town beat officers:
“It is crucial to remove these sites as soon as possible so they cannot be used by criminals to fund more serious illegal activities.
Through regular patrols of the streets in Thanet, our town centre officers know the locations well and are on hand to look into anything suspicious when they become aware of it, reacting swiftly to help keep communities safe.”
The seizure is part of Kent Police’s ongoing effort to disrupt organised crime and dismantle illegal drug networks operating in the region.
