Two women in Ohio are facing charges related to the alleged abuse of a corpse after a macabre incident involving their deceased housemate. Loreen Feralo, 55, and Karen Kasbohm, 63, lived with 80-year-old Douglas Layman in a house in Ashtabula, a town on the shore of Lake Erie in northern Ohio.
The bizarre turn of events unfolded when they discovered Layman’s lifeless body and decided on an unconventional course of action.
Instead of promptly reporting his death, the women carried Layman’s body to the front seat of his car. There, they propped it up and embarked on a grim mission: withdrawing money from his bank account.
The trio had visited the bank together before, and the staff there was familiar with them. In fact, Layman had previously allowed them to withdraw money from his account during their joint visits. Their familiarity with the bank’s drive-through till facilitated their scheme.
Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell expressed shock at their actions. “They left the body there without providing any information to the hospital. They just left him,” Chief Stell told Fox 8. Eventually, one of the women called the hospital to provide some details, leading to the identification of Layman’s remains. Officers subsequently visited Layman’s home, where the women admitted their actions.
This bizarre case bears eerie similarities to the plot of the 1989 movie “Weekend at Bernie’s.” In the film, two colleagues discover their boss is dead and attempt to convince others that he is still alive to avoid suspicion.
