An off-duty Metropolitan Police officer was stabbed with a machete on Saturday afternoon in Luton while trying to stop a group of thieves stealing a moped. The officer’s brave intervention left him bleeding in the street as the assailants fled on the stolen vehicle.
Emergency services rushed the officer to the hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery. The officer’s courageous actions have been widely praised by senior law enforcement officials and community leaders.
Temporary Bedfordshire Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic described the officer’s actions as “nothing short of heroic,” adding, “His courage in putting himself in harm’s way undoubtedly helped to prevent any further harm to the public. This level of wanton violence is utterly appalling and has no place on our streets.”
Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire John Tizard echoed these sentiments, stating, “This is one of many examples of police officers putting themselves at risk to protect the public. Even off duty, this officer stepped into danger to safeguard others. On behalf of Bedfordshire’s residents, I thank him for his courageous action and wish him a swift recovery.”
Bedfordshire Police are now appealing to the public for information regarding the incident. The suspects are described as two men in their early 20s. One suspect was reportedly wearing a black jacket and trousers, while the other was in a dark-coloured jacket and grey tracksuit bottoms with a white stripe down the side.
Detective Inspector Jon Stow from Luton CID stated, “This brazen attack occurred in a busy area and must have been frightening for witnesses. We believe the original victim of the attempted robbery left the scene, so we are keen to identify and speak to them. We are dedicating significant resources to this investigation to locate those responsible.”
Police will continue to maintain a high visibility presence in Luton town centre following this alarming incident. Residents with information or concerns are encouraged to speak with officers or contact the police.
Anyone with information is urged to come forward. Witnesses or those with details should contact Bedfordshire Police or call Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
