A North Wales Police officer has been cleared of grievous bodily harm (GBH) following a six-day trial at Mold Crown Court. The verdict was delivered today (Tuesday, April 29), with 25-year-old PC Ellis Thomas found not guilty of causing GBH to a 17-year-old boy during an arrest outside Cube nightclub in Bangor in January 2023.
The case followed an extensive investigation conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after a complaint referral from North Wales Police.
Thorough Independent Investigation
The IOPC’s inquiry into the incident began shortly after the complaint was lodged. Investigators reviewed critical evidence including body-worn camera footage and CCTV, and interviewed PC Thomas under caution. They also gathered statements from fellow officers and members of the public, including minors who were at the scene of the arrest.
The investigation concluded in July 2023, at which point the IOPC submitted a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS subsequently brought forward a charge of grievous bodily harm.
Court Verdict and IOPC Statement
IOPC Regional Director Derrick Campbell commented on the case, stating:
“Having heard and tested the evidence, the court has now reached its decision and we respect its verdict. This was a serious allegation involving a child, so it was important that it was independently and thoroughly investigated.”
Possible Disciplinary Proceedings
With the conclusion of the criminal trial, attention may now turn to internal disciplinary processes. The IOPC confirmed it will liaise with North Wales Police regarding any potential misconduct proceedings against PC Thomas.
What Happens Next
North Wales Police have not yet commented on the outcome or confirmed whether an internal investigation will proceed. The IOPC is expected to support the force in any further steps required.
