In a strongly worded statement, a top North Korean military official condemned the United States for its expanding military support to Ukraine. The remarks were reported by state media outlet KCNA.
General Pak Jong Chon, a prominent figure in North Korea’s military hierarchy, asserted that Russia had the “right to opt for any kind of retaliatory strike.”
He further warned that if Washington continued to push Ukraine into a “proxy war” against Russia, it could trigger a more forceful response from Moscow, potentially leading to a “new world war.”
The growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea has raised concerns in both the US and South Korea. Accusations of violating international laws through arms trading have been levelled against the two nations. According to a report by The Washington Post, North Korea may have supplied approximately 1.6 million artillery shells to Russia between August and January.
Last week, during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a pact. The agreement commits each side to provide immediate military assistance to the other in the event of armed aggression.
