Officers in Rotherham have initiated a murder investigation after the tragic death of a 20-year-old man in Wickersley on Sunday, June 2. The incident occurred shortly after 4pm, when authorities received reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of Morthen Road and Moat Lane.
According to reports, a silver Land Rover Discovery and a silver Subaru Forester were involved in the collision, causing both vehicles to veer off the road. Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, the 20-year-old man, who was a passenger in the Land Rover, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Following the collision, the driver and three passengers of the Subaru Forester fled on foot, leaving the scene. As part of the ongoing investigation, a 21-year-old man was apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Detective Inspector Matt Bolger, the Senior Investigating Officer, announced that the investigation into the man’s death has now been classified as a murder investigation. The team of detectives assigned to the case is diligently working to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident. DI Bolger urged the public to refrain from speculating about the incident and to respect the privacy of those affected.
