In the early hours of Saturday, August 24, detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team initiated a murder investigation following the discovery of a woman’s body in a city centre flat in Derry/Londonderry
Authorities are investigating a suspected murder following a fatal fire in a ground-floor flat on Harvey Street. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, August 24.
Upon arrival, crews from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, along with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and police officers, discovered the body of a woman in the bedroom of the property. The identity of the victim remains unknown, but authorities believe she may have been between 40 and 60 years old. According to Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, the woman had suffered a “horrific attack” resulting in multiple injuries.
We know this brutal murder has caused great concern, understandably, but we can assure you we are working at full pace to establish what happened and catch those responsible for this heinous and evil crime,” DCI Kelly stated. He added that an increased police presence would be in the city over the coming days as the investigation continues.
A crime scene has been established on Harvey Street, and authorities are conducting a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. DCI Kelly emphasized that while the investigation is in its early stages, they are committed to solving the case and ensuring justice for the victim.
The police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their enquiries. They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was in the Harvey Street area between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on the day of the incident and may have noticed any suspicious activity or unfamiliar vehicles in the area.
DCI Kelly also stressed the importance of community cooperation, stating, “I’m appealing directly to the local community to tell us anything you know. We need to find out who did this.”
