A murder investigation has been launched in Bury after the body of an 84-year-old man was discovered at his home address last week.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Major Incident Team confirmed that the man was found deceased at his property on Thursday, 13 March 2025. Following initial enquiries and a Home Office post-mortem, his injuries were deemed suspicious, prompting the launch of a full investigation.
As part of the inquiry, a 70-year-old woman, who was known to the victim, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday evening (18 March). The arrest took place at around 7pm on Butterstile Lane in Prestwich, Bury, and the woman remains in police custody.
Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson from the Major Incident Team said:
“We understand the concern this news will raise within Bury that we have launched a murder investigation, but I would like to reassure the local community that our initial enquiries suggest it is a contained incident with no wider threat to the public.
As part of our investigation, we must follow strict procedure and ensure we obtain as much evidence as possible to understand more about what happened, which has sadly led to an elderly man losing his life.”
Police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist with their investigation.
